Lead generation has to be a priority. In fact you must subscribe to this belief that coping with business not takes preference over locating enterprise. Doing direct generation everyday must come first before anything else gets done. If you do not embrace this mantra you'll allow different things to impact your day and this action will become insignificant and probably will not get done. If you are casual about it, then you'll suffer casualties in your small business.
The biggest challenge most brokers face is not doing some direct generation but doing it frequently. It's the only stumbling block that knocks most agents out of the ball park. It's the crucial daily activity that the successful brokers adopt and those exiting the sector failed to not perform.
You'll have to allocate time to doing so daily action. It's like creating an appointment with yourself; one which can't be broken. You'll face many temptations, typically coming from the unsuccessful agents in your office. Offers to have a long lunch or slide out for coffee are good but if they impede into your committed time of creating property prospects, then you must say "no".

And so therefore when you start your year, take out your calendar or diary and time block out of your vacations for your year. By doing this you prove to your self and family they are a priority. This includes not only the long trips away but program in a couple of mid week breaks or long four day weekends. These short breaks enable you to recharge and keep you going through the daily grind of real estate lead generation.
Secondly you need to allocate every day to really generating leads. I'd suggest doing so in both a journal and on a wall or table. It depends on your discipline to some level, but something that I hear from realtors who falter on carrying out their daily tasks is that they don't start their journal. A wall calendar is visual and what the eye sees, the mind will do.
